My name is Brett Gatlin and I live in Texarkana, Ar. I
began making knives by the stock removal method in February,
2002. As much as I enjoyed it, my intent was to learn
to forge my knives. In August, 2002, I had accumulated
the tools required to get started and currently hammer
forge my knives.
In
June 2003 I attended the Texarkana College/ABS Intro
to Bladesmithing class at Old Washington under instructors
Roger Massey and Greg Neely. I cannot emphasize enough
the value of those two weeks. I encourage anyone interested
in making forged knives to check it out.
I prefer to make traditionally styled knives which
will perform well, exhibit a great fit and finish, and
are pleasing to the eye. I work primarily with simple
carbon steels and tool steels. I have tested extensively
with each type that I use and am confident in their
abilities.
I take a structured approach to knifemaking, and all
steps in the process are well thought out prior to execution.
Attention to detail is very important, and while no
knife is perfect, it is certainly the goal.
I am a member of the American Bladesmith Society and
the Arkansas Knifemaker's Association.
As a part time maker, I produce 10-15 pieces annually
aside from show pieces. If you are interested in my
work, or just want to talk knives, feel free to contact
me. Thank you for your interest.
