I strive to make
every knife both visually pleasing and functional. All of my knives
meet some kind of need in terms of being functional, be it as a skinning
knife, general hunting knife, backpacking knife, or a tactical nature. They
may only be held in a person's collection but I take pride in the fact
that they will if you choose to use them perform well in their intended
field.
For the most part
I prefer to flat grind my blades as I feel this is the best compromise
between a good cutting edge and toughness. I do occassionally hollow
grind a blade when it makes send to the design or if the customer prefers
this grind.
I use ATS-34 the
most in my knifemaking but also offer knives in increasing number in S30V,
O1, as well as Damasteel. I am also experimenting with using BG42,
watch for knives coming out in this steel by fall 2004. I finish
my blades in either mirror finish or a hand rubbed satin finish. Regardless
of finish all my knives come razor sharp! Generally if my knife has
a bolster it will be a mirror finish unless otherwise requested. My
preferred bolster material is 416SS which will be either a straight edge
where it meets the handles or dovetailed depending on knife design &/or
customer preference. I find that 416SS keeps a solid finish
for a long time and of course looks great!
My handle choices
tend to be either high quality stabilized woods or synthetic materials. I
am a big fan of figured woods and will often compliment them with a mix
of 416SS & mosaic pins. I also offer knives with stabilized antler
and bone upon request. In terms of synthetic materials I am a really
like G10 which you will see on my more tactical oriented knives but
also offer a number of different micarta flavors if you prefer.
Although I offer
a number of my own knife designs I also enjoy doing one of a kind custom
designs for clients. Feel free to contact me with any ideas you may
have for your ideal knife.
