Stephen Vanderkolff
Once upon a time there was an accountant. He grew up knowing a lot about words and numbers but nothing about working with his hands. After many years he bought an old house and discovered the joy of fixing and building. He also discovered one of the great secrets to learning. "Ask lots of dumb questions". But fixing and building didn't fulfill that desire inside to create. He tried many things -writing, painting, woodworking- but nothing seemed to scratch that deep-seated itch.

Throughout this time, much to the horror of friends and family, he maintained his love of sharp shiny objects. Invariably, wherever he lived he had a target set up and a set of Hibben throwing knives handy. One day he decided he needed another set of throwing knives, so off he went to the nearest mall knife store and was astonished. They wanted $80 for a set of three little throwing knives. Completely outrageous. Off went our intrepid accountant to the basement with a chunk of steel purchased at the local Home Depot. He had a grinder; what else could he need. Well, try as he would, he just could not get that chunk of steel to look or fly like those old Hibbens he had. So, back to one of the early lessons: "Ask questions"

He went to the web
and what should appear
but a multitude of websites
with info so dear.
So he read and he practiced
for many long years
and lo and behold
his throwing knives did appear.

Somewhere in this process I discovered a few things.
  1. Being a perfectionist is okay.
  2. Hobbies can become passions.
  3. A man with a passion needs a very understanding wife.
  4. Most people do not understand knives.
  5. Hands are made to be used.
  6. There are still people whose word is their bond.

I would like to thank all those at the Knife Network forums for their encouragement and gift of knowledge freely shared.
