I do this occasionally with 'pre-formed' handle materials... a good piece of stag who's curve the blade needs to be one with, or maybe bone rounds... I have a nice piece of walrus ivory I plan on working backwards with, I will do nothing to the tusk except polish, and the blade needs to compliment the size and shape. I've never gone so far as to make the fittings first, though, but might as well....
