New forged Damascus knives
Hello all,
I just finished up my webpage to display my latest knives. They are made from cable Damascus forged blanks supplied by Gene Osborn. They come forged to shape, and are incredible to work with. I thought I'd post them to the newbies area, since I'm still pretty new at this. I treated the Amboyna burl and Ebony for the handles using Acryloid B-72 (Ethyl Methacrylate) and I must say I like it ALOT. I tried CPES, and was not impressed at all. The Damascus came with a little black scale that I took off with a belt sander. I chose a flat grind for the blade and sanded to 400 grit. Then I sent it to Gene for heat treating. Thanks Gene. After I got it back, there was not much left to do before etching. They came back in excellent shape. The hardest part was re-etching the handle part of the steel after sanding the wood down to match the contour. I really had fun building these knives and wanted to share my experience with the "forged to shape" blanks. The sheaths are still in the works. I bought a python skin to make the sheaths with, but haven't found a good way to incorporate it into the design yet. The first one I tried was UGLY! I have a nice pouch sheath I made with a pigskin lining, but it's just a trial. The lining keeps separating from the leather at the edges. Any ideas? Anyway, here's some pics and a link to my website. All comments and criticisms are welcome. Peterson Custom Knives Thanks for all the help. These forums are great. -Dave |

Dave,
A great job on both the knives! I love Gene's cable damascus. It really etches up nice. I like the handle material that you used. Bob Sigmon |
