Sorry I missed your wake up call. You're spot on as far as the history. The oldest (and coolest) model 5 I have EVER seen is one of Rhett's that he posted not too long ago. I hope he doesn't mind that I use his pic. Note the early stag handle top butt chamfer, the early large radius choil and the black button weak side carry Heiser. They just don't get much earlier or nicer condition than this one! There is some history that goes along with this one and maybe Rhett can relate this.
