knifemakers hammer

This is an interesting piece. Looks like a cross between a Tom Clark Custom hammer and a Japanise style with the angled face. looks like it would work. I like the little cross pien built into the face at the top. Any thoughts on this design?

Maybe the smith was short and the anvil tall.

That particular seller is known for misrepresenting stuff, but it is a darned odd hammer. Maybe a file-maker's hammer? Looks cast as well...

Maybe he does, but sometimes ya just got to make a guess at stuff. Some tools you just look at and say "What the heck ya do with that?" Only the old blacksmith that made it to do a particular thing would know. This guy has some cool jigs and interesting ideas for a "po boy" price. I like the railroad spike jig and the hitch ball hardy. Hammer looks rust pitted to me. Hope I win it. I have a bunch of oddballs in my collection.

Yes, Odd all right. Despite the corrosion, the surface does look like a casting as do all the sharp corners; but I would really like to see the other end ot it. It very well may be cast, and made for use in an odd niche craft of Great Grandfather. ..like a Pickle dimpler, or a pewter gutterers hammer.

Simple, it's a hammer for forging single-beveled chisel grinds.

OK, maybe not.

I think Chris is right. The back side would be easy, but the front side could be tricky. Or, it could be a pickle dimpler.

It makes me wonder if this is half a pair of a two hammer set.
