Steel in Minneapolis?

Anybody know of a place in Minneapolis area where you can buy some 1084 of the shelf?

Not off hand, I'd suggest calling around to machine shops and see if anyone will hook you up. Just be aware they are going to charge you a lot more. While you're talking to them I highly suggest asking THEM where to look for 1084 in town. Minneapolis is a big city, I'm sure there is a company that deals in steel up there.

I'm a lot less optimistic about you finding a local supplier of 1084, it's not use that much any more. You might be able to find a supplier that carries tool steel and pick up some W1 but that would most likely be round stock. Places that build auto springs might be willing to sell you cut off but that would most likely be 5160 or even 9260. If you are wanting 1084, the most reliable source is going the be The New Jersey Steel Baron.

Doug

Yeah my own research, talking to about half a dozen steel vendors, has been unsuccessful.

Agree with Doug. Also Kelly Couples carries 1080 (you'd never know the difference).
Most machine shops I've been in lately have to "look up" 1084 just to find out what it is.
They do tend to have O1 around, but not a recommended beginner's steel.
Aldo (NJSB) is good to deal with and carries quality steel.

Seriously, call machine shops. They will know. That's usually how I manage to find most of my really good suppliers when I want something 'right now'.

If its here, I haven;t found it

You might get lucky at Discount Steel on Washington Ave off 94 (Very slim chance). They carry tool steels A2/D2 etc, but they typically dont stock it

Best off ordering from NJSteelBaron

Yeah I had no success. Discount steel had none, like several other places they said they could order it. That did me no good because I was only in town for a couple of days. Now back home in the frozen wastes of ND.
