Here is what I have for spring tempering 440C and ATS-34.

440C S.S. Springs & Rockers 43 to 45 RC 1100?F 1 hr. 1 time

ATS-34 S.S. Springs & Rockers 43 to 45 RC 1200?F 2 hrs. 2 times

Seems to work well for me.

Bill

Also for future reference you may want to book mark this link. I like my springs to be a little harder than the hardness given here but they are a good guide to figure out what works for you.

thanks Kirby, I was reading a old thread that also suggested 1160 for one hour one time. would 60 degrees make much of a difference?

22H2, Yes a 60 degree difference will change the Rockwell hardness. Assuming you have a hardness tester, the best advice I can give you is to start at the low end, may be as low as 1050 degrees. Then step up in 25 degree increments until you reach the desired hardness. I like my springs to Rockwell around 48-50.

The thing about using any printed heat treating specs is that there not using your equipment to get there specs so you must do a little testing to get things figured out.

Happy Heat Treating!!!!!
