Help Wanted
I have spent most of my time recently trying to put a square peg in a round hole or so it seems. I'm trying to use a somewhat worn out lathe to mill the intregal bolster/liners for my first folders and finding that at least with the machinery that I have it is a lengthy process. To those of you who machine these, how long do you take to do similiar machining and what if any is the additional value to the price of such a knife over pinned and soldered bolsters?

Help Wanted
It takes me about an hour to mill mine Gary. I prefer the intergral approach rather than pinning and soldering as I've found that it is messy and fiddly, however you must find whay method is best for you using your existing equipment.

Thanks Neil,
Around the vise that I use to solder there is always a mess and most of the nearby tools have a coat of rust so I guess that I'll continue to mill the liners rather than solder them. My biggest problem so far has been dovetailing the bolsters. The dovetail mills are prone to overheating and there isn't room for a fly cutter. I guess that I'll have to incorporate some type of coolant though I've been hesitant to because of the mess. Thanks for the advise. Gary |

Help Wanted
Gary, I "brush on" a coolant that contains no sulphur as this can lead to rusting everything in the workshop.

heres a idea that might save you alot of time
if you have an xy table.. mount it under a radial cut saw..
the kind that slides back and forth... mount a vice under the saw, put a cutoff disk on the saw.. clamp material in vise and run the blade thru the material needing to be removed..adj the xy table to move the material in the blades path and cut thru it agian...it would probably take 10 mins to remove 90% of the metal you need to remove.. then use a more precision eqp to finish up...its just an idea on how to remove alot of metal easily and cheaply, probably cost $250 for everything.. |
