Push Knife KITH

This is the official announcement of the Push Knife KITH! For those of you who have not done a KITH before, a KITH - which means Knife In The Hat - is an exercise where all interested parties make a knife that fits an assigned theme. When the KITH is over, everyone who made a knife will score all of the knives in the KITH. Then, according to the scores that YOU assigned everyone will trade their knife for one with the closest score to theirs - everyone gets a new knife!

As many of you know, the purpose of these KITHs is to give you a reason to make a knife that uses some feature or technique that you may not have had a chance to use before. In other words, they are learning opportunities. The goal is NOT to make the fanciest knife possible - no need to buy damascus and ivory as that teaches you nothing except how to hide large expenditures from your significant other. The goal is to do something new to you with the best fit and finish you can manage and follow the rules as close as you can. Museum quality collector grade stuff is not needed here!

*******
For this KITH, these are the rules:

A T-handled push knife

A 3" blade is recommended but you may use any length you like

The blade must be hollow ground

Some sort of concealment sheath to go with the knife

You have until Halloween of this year to complete the work.
********

A short blade is suggested because it is much easier to hollow grind a short blade. If you don't have a grinder with a contact wheel you have about half a year to find a buddy in your area who does have one.

The blade does NOT have to be a dagger style. Any style blade and any handle design you like can be used as long as the over all result is a push knife. Here are a few examples I pulled off the internet at random that show different handles and blade styles on push knives, some fancy and some plain:

Have fun and learn something new!

Hollow grinds are easy but everyone is nervous the first time. Keep the blade short and do a regular blade rather than a dagger to make it more manageable ...

Like I suggested, you might be able to find someone local to you that would let you work in his shop for such a small project. But, if you can't do that then maybe you can add a wheel to your grinder if you have a grinder that would co-operate. I made a 5" wheel for mine from a cart wheel I bought from MSC. It's 2" wide, has a polyurethane rim, an aluminum hub with bearings and is meant for those heavy carts like they use in warehouses or places like Home Depot. Didn't cost much, about $25. This is exactly the kind of situation that lets you exercise your creativity. Think about it and you'll find a way ...

I was thinking the same thing. An ulu is legal because we live with Eskimos. Lol

Push daggers are prohibited for carry in the USA but there is no law against owning one unless some local municipality might have such a law. Sorry to say, that isn't the case in Canada.

If we could get at least TWO Canadian makers interested we could add a category for a hollow ground boot knife. That way, when the time comes to swap knives around we wouldn't have to cross any borders....

I'm in! I sketched a first draft out yesterday and didn't care for it. Ill probably look for a tried and true pattern instead of trying to reinvent the "wheel" so to speak...
