What patterns ??
Just wondering out loud here. Im going to pick up my press at the end of the month. It's a Ron Claiborn 30 ton.
Im just wondering what type patterns are the best to start with, and what materials. I currently have some 1095, 1084, 15N20 and I've ordered some powder 1084 and 406EE, Any suggestions for canned mosaic? Or should I practice a while before I jump into that? Got loads of ideas, but never useing a press before has me at a disadvantage of not knowing what to expect! Also, I had read somewhere that brake drum turnings make good filler for mosaic, Any thoughts on that?? I figure it's cast steel, but no Idea of the content. But it's FREE!!!!!! would a can filled with sawchain, then have the voids filled in with brake turnings make a decent blade? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated for a newbie!! using the press....
Hi Mike!
Although your itching to go crazy on your new press ( I know I was too!) Take the time to make a few billets of random damascus, just to get the feel for how the press works. Where a power hammer works the billet from the outside in.........a press works the billet from the inside out! The first week I had mine, I made 6-7 sets of dies just to do what I wanted it to. Once you get going with it, you'll be amazed at all the patterns you can produce.......... most of the ideas you presented should work just fine. Remember to respect the thing.......your working with hydraulics.........so make sure everything is tight (fittings) before you start, and then give the press a once over each week. "Squashing" stuff is a lot different than hammering, complete with it own set of dangers and risks. Learn your machine, take your time, and it will be an enjoyable and safe journey!! Congrats!! __________________ WWW.CAFFREYKNIVES.NET Caffreyknives@gmail.com "Every CHOICE has a CONSEQUENCE, and all your CONSEQUENCES are a result of your CHOICES." |

Who AHHHH! Love the press- is that an airboat to the right of the press or is that some high-powered exhaust fan?
Thanks for sharing Dave |

Dave
It is a low powered fan which hinges back against the wall when not use. I used the press to weld my first piece of steel.
