The filings would work if you know what type of blade steel they are and if you can get them clean. No point in putting steel in a blade if that steel won't harden. Dirty filings, even oily filings will put impurities in the steel that will show up later as pitting, inclusions, or in really bad instances even as weak welds ...

That makes perfect sense Ray, I was thinking about all the filings I could get from a machine shop but they are guaranteed to be dirty and be of many different grades of steel. That won't work and I'm not willing to waste my time trying to make it work lol.

I had thought about this, too, but most machine shops will do all sorts of metals, not even just steel. You might get aluminum, brass and whatever in your mix. Plus, they usually use a cutting fluid on their saws to prolong the life of the blade. No idea how you would clean this stuff. Not worth the trouble, I think...

It isn't worth the time to find out lol. I may have to find somebody in the US to help me out sometime. How critical is the powderd metal in canned damascus?
