Hunter, Ray is spot on. There really are no shortcuts to this, we all have to grind and grind until we find out what works for us (Because no two knifemakers work the same way) and to develop the muscle memory that give you the fine control you need to grind your lines and bevels straight.

And I'm sure Ray the other great old masters here will tell you, even they botch a grind now and then, even today.

Time and practice. Time and Practice. But it's all worth it in the end.

I don't have any Mr. Rogers references however I would like to second the idea of covering the blade with magic marker to see where you are really filing. It gives you instant feedback, unless you file with your eyes closed.

In my experience, aluminum oxide is bad for everything. I'm not sure why its widely used. For wood, I use zirconium. I like it because its also decent on steel.

Ok thanks! Sorry I take so long. I get busy during the day so I can't always respond quickly. I'm going to definitely use draw filing and I'll about developing that feel.

And yeah I have to agree about the aluminum oxide belts. They were faster than my filing to get the shape of the blank, but they weren't great. I'll have to try out those other belts.

I'm a recent transplant, but I should have been born here. Feels like home should.
