I should get the full skinny on this at the Knifemakers' Guild Show in Louisville this weekend. I'm sure it will be a subject of much discussion at the business meeting on Friday.
Supposed to be a joint venture with the ABS as I understand it.

Ok thanks in advance Carl for any info. I think a joint venture between the 2 would be a good thing. And even better if it is in Kansas City!

Drac,
If I am at a crossroads, oogling at this Aussie makers webpage usually has me raring to hit the workshop. Personal preference if you like his work or not, but it works for me. I actually wouldn't mind owning one of his knives.

I went through the same thing several years back, didn't finish a single knife for 5 years. I started back again 5 years ago, making knives that are in many ways polar opposites of the knives I was making before. If you look at some of my recent work, you'll see I have simplified things...

The truth is, if I was in it for the money I'd have found a better way to make money by now... I make what I want to make. If someone asks me to make a particular knife for them, it has to be something I am interested in or I'll politely suggest someone else. Yeah, I loose a sale, but I keep my spirit strong, instead of laboring to make something I have no pleasure in making... that would be too much like a real job... If you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life, someone once said. Well, do what you love to do, and do it for no other reason.

Edited to add:
My advise is, stay away from commissions for a while. If you are anything like me, you have a knife you've always wanted to make, but for some reason have never tackled.... now's the time to tackle it. Once it is finished, put the word out, post it for sale on all the forums, give your previous customers a heads-up that it is available. If it sells awesome, if it don't you now have that show-piece to let potential customers know what you are capable of. This is also a good time to make some extremely simple knives (I like to call them therapy knives), knives you can relax with while making. Just for fun and giggles, see how simple you can actually make them, see it as a challenge to minimalism...

I was digging through my knives the other day and found three made by Jim that have been a pleasure to own for many years. It got me wondering how he's doing.
Has he ever gone back to the shop, sold it off? Maybe I'll send an email...

GHEzell said it well: make that knife you've always wanted to. I have such a knife on the bench--just assembling parts right now. I hope to complete it soon. It will have many 'firsts'.

I also tried to stay away from commissions for a while, but I made a push dagger once and it became popular, so people wanted it. To discourage commissions without saying "no" outright, I just put what I thought was a cost-prohibitive price on it. They keep selling. Now it's hard to say no to the money because it buys lots of premium materials.

Hope you are well Jim.
