filet knive
hi gang,
been toying with the idea of tryin to make a filet knife. I get the impression the balde should be 6-10inchs long and my other question is how thick should the steel be to start seems to me 1/8 inch would be too thick?? Any comments would be great. Thanks Ross |

Ross, it depends on the type of fish you are using it on.Most run about 7"-8" and 1/16" or 3/32" stock. I have made a few recently that were ordered to be large for ocean fish. These guys just got tired of the smaller thin bladed knives. These were made with a 9 1/2" blade and 1/8" stock with a very long distal taper. They love them.Hope this helps.Dave

I agree with Dave, it depends on what size fish you are working with. It also depends on how you like to do the job. Some guys like a lot of flex and some prefer a stiff blade. Most of mine are 9 - 11" blades of 3/32nds or 1/8th material. The amount of flex is controlled by how wide I make the blade and how much taper it has ....

Just curious Dave.... what do you get for that knife.....is it forged or ground? I have been toying with the idea for a while and yours is inspiring.
