The hunting knife, I'm not much of a fisherman although I might end up doing both......

You did a great job on the knife, and I like the swing away sheath. IMHO, Nessmuks have a lot of visual appeal, plus they work like they're supposed to. That's one to be proud of.

I like that Kephart fishing knife. I have always seen that pattern called a "bait knife". They would have a bucket of then sitting by the cash register in old bait stores as impulse buy items. Cost, 2-3 bucks. I will try to dig up one as there should be several laying around here.

A quick search dug up a pic suggesting that they still make them altho with plastic molded handles.

HammerDN; I almost bought one of those cheap things a couple years ago when I wen salmon fishing with a friend. I didn't see the similarity between the kephart knife and that until now. Gahhh! now I'm considering designs........

Just posted a passage from Kephart's Camping and Woodcraft about his kit in the Nessmuk KITH thread. Thought you might like to see it

http://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/sh...694#post247694

By this time, Kephart had gone to almost the same kit as Nessmuk.

Interesting reading. And some of the text sounds almost word for word out of Nessmuk's writings, particularly about Kephart's/Nessmuk's opinions about the typical hunting (bowie) knife of the time.

Wow, took me awhile to find this thread. Guess thats what we get for having three going on the same subject

I found one stuck down in a basket of old fillet knives and pewter and bone butter knives from back when I use to collect three tined forks. Lost most of them in a move in 67'. Man I am old. As I remember (old timers desease) or as Gene Chapman calls it Old Fart Syndrom, I had to carve on the butt of it a little because the dog chewed it. Must have smelt real good to him. I don't know what the gunk is on the tip, but I ain't gonna taste it to tell ya. Dont' seem any doubt this is a direct desendant of the Kephart. Any one care to argue? Under the scaler it reads stainless. On the riccasso it says:
Ideal
Products Inc.
Japan

Roc, That sure is a dead ringer. Maybe another KITH in the future.

Taste the gunk and let us know

Ditto what Carl said; the dead ringer part, not the tasting part.

I think I can do that, I'll have to go and look at the fish scaler in my swiss army knife to see how to gring those teeth...... hmmm.... I wonder how a row of those on the hump of a nessie would work?

As for the gunk.... Send it to Carl and let him taste it if he realy wants to know what it is.

Gary,

Bet you could do pretty good. Like Kephart on that marble knife.

I don't want to taste it, you never taste another man's gunk

So. . .that's stainless? A long time ago I bought a cheap knife at a flea market, one of the ones made in Pakistan (before I new better). Anyway, it said it was stainless. It was. But only on the side that said stainless.

But I digress. . .
