New sheaths

Some sheaths I just finished up, thanks to all the help I received here. I really like the dropped loop sheath design, with the roll on top, like Sheathmaker does it. Now gotta try to perfect it, or at least make it look good.

Charlie

3 are deerskin lined and the others have 2 oz. glued on the rough side. Buttons are carved from deer antler.

deer antler buttons were added to these 3.

small folder pouch and pouch for a large folder, it has a welt of 5 layers of 9 oz. leather.

these two are small ones, about 4" long.

Charlie; good looking work, my friend. It looks like you've got the rolled lining process down pat. Now practice and repititon will refine the skill even more with each one. A small hint............when dealing with the thickness of 5 layers of 9 oz. try skiving the two outer edges of the outside layer by 1/2 or maybe slightly more before glue up. This does not alter the inner clearance room you needed, but will give the optical illusion of a much thinner sheath. the reduction of apparent thickness is approx. 20%

Paul

Charlie, that's a super group of sheaths, clean lines and a lot of attention to detail! Even though it's the "simplest" of the bunch, I like the filet knife sheath the best. Simple, elegant lines, and perfectly executed

Thanks guys, and I appreciate the tip Paul. I will use it.

And, I like the three undecorated ones best too.

Now I have to figure out a quick draw sheath for a SOG, almost like a K-bar. And it has to hold the knife carried upside down. Maybe something with a rare earth magnet? Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks, Charlie

Charlie, your Colorado buddy, MtMike is the guru of rare earth magents. He's done quite a few using them.

Question on lining a fixed blade sheath....the roll looks really nice, but does the lining run the entire length of the sheath? If so, won't the blade cut into it while inserting/extracting the blade?

I'm just wondering ....again the roll looks very nice for display purposes, but how practical is a liner if the knife is gonna be a regular "user"?

Rick (I wouldn't expect Paul to brag on his own sheaths ) -- I have 4 of Paul's sheaths, 3 fixed blades and one folder pouch. All of them are perfect for every day carry, as well as looking great. One of them carries a Dozier Personal Wharncliffe with a seriously pointy blade, and I've had no problems with it.
Yes, Paul's liners run the entire length of the sheath. The liners are glued securely, and each sheath is fit properly to the knife. I think that both are key to getting reliable performance from any sheath, lined sheaths in partiicular, and Paul does it better than anyone. A while ago there was a pictorial here on KN showing Paul's lining techniques.

I have never cut the liners, which run the length of the sheath. I seal the liner then use Neat Lac, and no problems so far. Charlie

Charlie, I apologize for praising Paul's work without giving due credit for yours also ---looks to me like you've taken great care to get the kind of fit that makes liners work the right way

Charlie, my friend----I received your package! By looking and admiring the sheaths you display here, I am exceptionally pleased that you saw fit to turn to this old buzzard. I will take care of this in a manner in which (hopefully) pleases you!!!! Sandy
