i still whinge about that one andy, i sure missed out on one hell of a knife. although the replacement is pretty dam cool.
i think double edge should sure be out or else you could just have a selective drawing, making sure knives go to places theyre legal.

Since I had so much delay on Vet's one I'll just sit back & watch.

Also Gent's EDCs are one of my standard lines and I think people around here are getting a little tired of getting them from me.

Actually Dwane, that's a very good question!

When I think of a 'gent's' knife, I picture a particularly tailored finish. It doesn't have to black tie per se', but...

Perhaps it's easier to explain what rules I will be using to guide me when I make mine.

The one I make will not have a hammered, rustic, or frontier finish.
It won't be artificially aged.
It will not use rawhide on the sheath.
It will not have serrations on the blade.
The handle material will be a fine, but natural material as opposed to micarta, etc.
The profile design will be simple and elegant as oposed wild and angular.
I don't make many bolsters or guards, but this would be a good candidate for one.
It will not be overly aggressive in it's design, but will still grab the eye.

These are just a few of the things that will be going through my mind when I draw the design. They only apply to me and what I consider to be my guiding parameters. Others will interpret 'gent's' very differently, to be sure.

Don Cowles and Jim Droulliard come to mind when I think of this style. Their work will guide me, but mine will be considerably different

Thanks for including me with Don's work Andy. Trust me mine is the low end of that style

Dwayne, at least to me, a Gent's model is:

Small, less than 6" overall
Small bladed, 3" or less
Slender, mine are usually about 3/4" at the widest part
Smooth lines, though I have seen some art deco styles
Lends itself to higher end materials, mostly due to the small handle
Also lends itself well to embellishment such as engraving
Has an elegance that makes it go well with a business suit

I started by looking at high end folders & thinking how they would look as fixed blades.

Jim

P.S. - Dwayne, I got a hold of Terrill & he is suppose to email me the photo to me.

Jim, don't be so shy, your little blades are great gent's knives. Tried to find a pic of the Mammoth Tooth one I got from you last, but pic seems to be gone. That knive screams gent's EDC.

That's the look. And just for a kicker, I carried one of these with me elk hunting this year. They can easily handle most tasks needed while gutting a elk! Wouldn't recommend removing the ivories with it, and you won't split bone with it (that's what the saw is for), but it was ideal for getting in with one hand and working around your other inside of the cavity!

Here is yours Carl.

I included these more so for the sheaths (Paul nailed these) but also to show some of the possible handle materials I use. The handle in the above shot is natural jet.

Giraffe

Interior mammoth ivory

Walrus jaw bone

Hope this helps,
Jim

Yep Jim, I have that top one and one with mammoth tooth from you. That blue giraffe one is the one I took elk hunting this year, and it did everything I could have expected. Remember guys, just because it is a gents knife doesn't mean it can't perform hard duty tasks!
