Cork Scales?

Didn?t find a thread on this?

I just received a slab of natural cork (in this case used for flooring). I have read that it is finished with plain polyurethane and makes a pretty durable floor surface.

This weekend I am going to experiment to see if it will stabilize. If it works I think it will make a cool looking filet knife handle.

Anyone tried or seen this before? Any thoughts?

I wanted to try it but could never seem to find a suitable piece of cork.

The stabilizing might be OK if the cork is dense enough. If it's loose with large voids the stabilizing won't fill it. Also, the cork is probably thin, a half inch or less, and stabilizing thin porous materials often results in some warpage .

But what the heck, send off a couple of pieces and see what happens. It's cheap and experimentation is the heart of knifemaking....

A friend of mine used some cork on a knife with some good results. He finished it with superglue and stacked it between some hardwood for stability (almost like you would do with a leather washer handle). It made for a very lightweight handle, and it looked nice too.

been using specie cut (1/2" thick discs of various diameters) cork for flyrod handles for 40+ years. never bothered to finish it with anything, but probably couldn't hurt to experiment. hot melt glue works well on it. the cork rings are available almost anywhere rod making supplies are found.
.
also had a small cork handled filet knife once upon a time. nice thing about it, it would float!

here's the question, will there be enough cork in the handle to make the knife float? I see fishing / filleting knives in your future it it does
