Mike,

You can search for these synonyms for Methyl methacrylate:

Methacrylic acid methyl ester
Methylmethacrylate
Methyl 2- methylpropenoate
Methyl 2-methy1-2-propenoate
MME
Pegalan

Does it need to be activated??

Thanks Again

Ron:
Thanks for the info. Have you tried MMA??
If so were you happy with the results?

As I mentioned, Im more concerned with being able to fill voids in the burl pieces.

Thanks And God Bless

Mike

Mike,
I've used MMA monomer for stabilizing. It works great, but it's very volatile with a low flashpoint, so be careful. I think the best stuff is styrene/MMA mixture. The MMA thins the styrene out.

It's been a little while since I did it, but you can polymerize it with benzoil peroxide like Ron said. I had a heck of a time ordering it from the chemical houses (aldrich) because they said you had to be a scientist at a university to recieve it, plus there were hazmat fees. They didn't think my "mad scientist" joke was too funny. Then I stumbled on a place in California that uses it for special effects for the movie industry. They sold it to me cheap with no hazmat and right to my doorstep.

If you're interested in MMA and wood stabilizing, I have a library of information on my website you might want to check out. It's got a lot of the methods for polymerizing MMA. They are all archived in pdf format, so they're free to pass around.

Here's the library

Enjoy.

Mike,
I found the link to the place I bought the MMA. It's actually in Arizona, not California. The place is called Factor 2, and the MMA is called "non crosslinked monomer" or item number J-570. The links are below:

Main Website
Here's the MMA webpage
And here's the safety datasheet that tells you the ingredients

I ordered it right from their website. No questions asked and it arrived in a few days.

Also notice that it lists Hydroquinone as an ingredient. That's an inhibitor, but by using enough catalyst you can overcome it.

I also remembered one of the pdfs I have posted on my website mentions WSSI using MMA on page 13 (highlighted). You may be interested in some of that research.

Here's the link.

Have fun experimenting, and let us know what your results are.

Mike,
MMA can be poymerized by a catalyst like perozide, or heat, or radiation. I've used peroxide awhile ago, but if I were doing more than a couple of blocks, i might look at radiation. Mainly I send the blocks to be treated to WSSI. I found that it was fun to learn the process, but for long term profit, I would have to invest in a good vacuum setup, and buy the chemicals in bulk.

The method I used was to put the wood in a glass canning jar with a vacuum pump attached, fill it with MMA/catalyst, pull a vacuum until most of the bubbling stopped, then release the vacuum. Repeat the vacuum again and release, doing that 10 or so times. If you use a lot of catalyst, the liquid gets gummy before you get complete penetration. However, if you were to use radiation, you can reuse the MMA that doesn't get absorbed.

After i pulled the wood out of the glass jar, i would bake it for an hour in a toaster oven on it's lowest setting. Be carefull. Anything over 100 degrees will explode the MMA. I also wrapped the blocks in foil before putting them in the oven.

I hope this answers your questions. It's not the most scientific approach, but it DOES work. Good luck, and it can be a lot of fun.
