My first fillet knife
Blade is 440c about 7" long and close to 12" oal
Handle is stabilizes maple burl. It's not as flexable as I wanted but it came out ok. What do ya think? |

Well James it's a beauty of a knife and the sheath is a unique design I like it ! As far as flexability what thickness is the blade. I used to use one eigth but i found that it was a little stiff now i use 3/32.

Very nice! Was it tricky? I've got a half dozen guys hounding me to make fillet knives for them, but I keep putting them off because it seems like too many things can go wrong. Not to mention that I haven't flat ground a blade in about 15 years. I don't want to think about what that long, narrow, thin blade would look like when I finished. So basically it boils down to the fact that I'm too chicken to try it.

Thanks guys, the steel started out .093 thick I'm sure I took off several thou. just getting it flat. The trickiest part was trying to grind it so thin, it would flex a little while grinding and get hot in a second. Seem like I was dunking it in water more than grinding.

Great looking knife. I made a filet knife a while back and it wasnt that bad to do. I also found that you had to dunk a lot more to keep it cool!

I've heard they can actually warp just from the heat of grinding such a thin, long blade. Maybe I'll give one a go this winter when things are slow in the shop and I need the entertainment.
