Gut hook

I got to buff this one and she's done. I'm thinking never again, but who knows

440C, stainless pins, Garnet and Gold fiber liners, and Koa?

I have vowed to myself to never make one of those!

And just earlier today I was selling a few knives I finished to a couple guys and the one asks me "do you ever make those knives with the hook thing on the front".. Made me laugh...

I try and make what i think would sell and i never woulda thunk someone would ask for one of those.... to each is own i guess.

As a hunter I have never seen the need for a gut hook myself. I have killed a bunch of deer and have never used it. I do think it looks cool though. After 35 years of hunting I now just de-bone the deer where he hangs and leave the guts intact. I still like your knife.

From the reading that I've done it seems that they generally don't work all that well. They just fill up with fur or hair. I look on them a gimmick that pushed by the knife industry. They're a lot like the saw teeth on the spines of the super tactical knives.

Many, many years back I read a magazine article about the first knife made with a gut hook like that. Turns out, the guy who made it wasn't making a gut hook - he was making an unsharpened hook that looked just like that to use for lifting the bail of a hot coffee pot off his camp fire. Some people saw that knife and immediately assumed it was for gutting and requested he make one for them for that purpose. So, there you are.....the result of mistaken identity. Some guys say they work well, most who really do a lot of game dressing might not choose to have one, but it looks like they are here to stay. Coffee anyone?

BTW, this is the only knife I have ever made with a gut hook. It's a custom order for a very large man who has used it for many years for butchering hogs. The blade is 440C and about 8 or 9" long. Every part of the blade is sharp - edge, curve, spine and, of course, the hook. It was a nightmare to make. I have had several requests to make another but have always refused....

I bought one a while back and have used it from time to time but only for skinning. I use the NO GUT method for dressing most of my animals I found that once the "hook" got dull it wasn't worth it. This guy insisted he needed one so I made it because he is helping me out too, but IF i ever make another one it will not be cheap. Mr. ray that thing is a beast.

Fish
After looking at the handle on this one more closely (better lighting in pic), pretty sure it's not desert ironwood. The endgrain pattern is not that of a leguminace. I will get a chunk of known koa out and check it's endgrain to see if there's a match. How does that wood smell when you sand it? Could possibly be monkey pod (would smell like incense).

Most of the koa I have worked smelled like a combination of camphor and dried grass. It is kind of subjective. If you have a small scrap piece you can part with, give it to Henry Cambron (current President) and I'll get it from him later. I'll do some camparision tests and let you know what I think.

Kewl. after looking at more pictures I think it's curly koa the monkey pod has about the same end grain but not as bright. Pops says its not Koa and he does know is wood, so the monkey pod is a high probability
