Shane,

As always your work is quite nice. Intersting choice of Micarta and Water Buffalo. One thing I've always liked about your knives are the etch... What exactly do you use to etch it? I'm working on a folder right now that a finish like yours would be perfect on. Anyways, yeah... keep up the good work!

Chris Nilluks

P.S.: Thanks for the link...

Hey Chris, Thanks Buddy !

I was going to mention that the Buff horn is quite beautifull but my photo skills didnt show it. Tomorrow my new setup for pics will be complet and maybe I can get a better pic.

As far as the etch goes....I just take my blades to a 500-800 grit finish depending on the look im trying to accomplish then I etch it in Ferric Chloride Acid and Distilled water...The soak times vary quite a bit. I really change that up a lot. If you would like more details shoot me an email and ill explain it in more detail. It sure is fun playing with though.

Thanks again,

Shane

Lookin' good Shane........Nice curves in that design.

Keep working on those photo skills.......You are almost there...

I need to do the same. I have been watching Coop's thread and Steves thread very closely. Great info there on photo techniques.

Again.......Great Knife.

Robert

Shane it's pretty rare when my wife comments about a knife! I had to post because she really likes it but wants to see a more detailed picture, especially the handle

Thanks a bunch everyone.

Robert, What a pain. This photo thing has wracked my brain the last week. I just about broke out the New camera to try it but still waiting for the old owner to give me some instruction. Oh well.....in time.

Dave, I went down and took a couple more photos.......Not much success. Maybe its my knives, Maybe I just need a nice knife to shoot. Heres a couple more that may be a little better but tell your wife Thank You for the Comments.

Shane

Mace, once I had one Bolster in place I drill through 3 holes in the tang that penetrated the bolster aprox 3/16" I Epoxied three stainless pins (maybe 2 would have been fine but oh well ). Before Epoxying the first bolster I had marked the other to give me an aprox are for the pins. drilled into that bolster and luck would have it ...it fit nicely on the pins. I then epoxied that boster on.

Hope that explains it.....thanks for the kind words.

Shane

I know what you mean but the photo thing being frustrating! It is somtimes harder than making the knife! LOL

You have me curious, Ive never tried the hidden pins. do you drill these holes in your bolster BEFORE the bolster is shaped? then put it togather and grind to shape, then put it togather on the knife? I could see the benifit in doing it this way, an inner locking device to hold it from slipping while you shape the face of the bolsters.

Just wondering, I really like to use horn for bolstrers, especialy on kitchen knives, to me its a very classy look, plus it wont tarnish, and Im assuming it is solid enough to be semi bactaria proof??

Nothing like teaching an Old dog a new trick!!

Keep em coming, Im really enjoying your work.

God Bless
Mike

Mike, Boy youve got that Old Dog thing right ! :-)

First off let me say what a wise man told me.....This is just the way ive done it and ive only done a few so im still in the learning stages of this Bolster stuff.

The bolster Faces are completed first.
Bolster Bis placed on tanga and holes marked.
Bolster A is epoxied in place, dry then drilled aprox 1/2 way through. Not going too far.
Pins are placed without epoxy first then Bolster B is Drilled using the original marks placed earlier.
Bolster B is placed on the pins and checked to see if both bolsters line up. If so then Pins are epoxied in Bolster A and Bolster Bi is placed on and epoxied.

Pins are pretty snug but yet move around slightly to allow you to get the face of the bolsters lined up. Then the Bolsters are profiled.

Did I just confuse the Heck out of ya ? Give me a shout If I can help anymore.

My first knife I made with this Buffallo horn was sold to a Chef at a local Kitchen. He LOVES it. He abuses the heck out of it and says that it looks as good as it did when he bought it 3 months ago. Seems to be pretty durable stuff.

Talk to ya soon,

Shane
