Finished a couple

I finished a couple the past several days & took advantage of the snow photo-op. Both 1/8" 1084 carbon.

Birdseye maple scales

Japanese Chestnut scales

Wow man, very nice work. The knife handles flow nicely with the blade

Nicely done Goater! Can see the "jeweler" part of you in the fit/finish.
What part of the NC Mtns? I have a place out in Hanging Dog.

Thanks for the nice comments. I'm enjoying the time spent on these knives, and even the necessity of learning to make the leather sheaths. And it keeps me out of trouble. :-)

Crex I'm over in Hendersonville south of Asheville. Actually live out near Bat Cave. Never been to Hanging Dog and had to look it up. Waaaay out toward Murphy I see. Do people actually live out there? JK. Thanks for the comments, and yes, 31 years of hand crafting jewelry is helpful in making knives. Kind of an easy transition actually.

Just the "hitching post" - have to dismount and walk in from there. My cabin is just 1/4 mile NE and down the ridge from the bear cave overlooking Beaverdam.

Bat Cave's a beautiful place. Lots of big climbing rocks in that area. Wish I could still flex enough to climb safely.

I love the mountains, love being outdoors, love being on top of the mountains...

....but I'll get there on foot and not by a vertical accent! Rock climbing is not for me! I get vertigo on a step-stool!

I especially like the second knife.
I make a great effort to align handle grain with the shape and lines of the tang and I appreciate it when others do the same.
That grain, for being mostly straight is very attractive with just the right amount of 'curl' in just the right areas.
Nicely done.
Do you taper your tangs?

Thanks for the comments. Being a jeweler for over 30 years specializing in designing and hand fabrication has helped to easily transition into knife making. My eyes just note "when it looks right" and that particular wood is easy to work with, with a simple but attractive grain pattern. And so I confess not a great deal of planning goes into it, I just look at the wood, moving the knife tang around and when it "looks right" that's where I cut the scales. The grain aligning with the shape and lines of the tang just "looks right". Small details make all the difference, in jewelry making, and I'm learning, in knife making as well. The birdseye maple scales were ordered.

No, I do not taper the tangs. I'm currently grinding bevels with a cheap 1 X 30, hoping to sell a few knives (and maybe a rifle) saving my pesos for a KMG.

So tapered tangs just isn't something I've had any focus on and realistically, I don't know the purpose other than aesthetics perhaps. Seems to me it would just complicate scale fitting.

Oh my friend... Allow me...
Tapered tangs are the mark of a hand made knife because no factory will ever invest the time.
It gives the blade an 'arch'. Actually, it shapes it like an elongated football with a distal taper at the front. Arches in architecture impart incredible strength.
It also lightens the tang.
Yes, it complicates the handle fitting, but it's easy to figure out with a couple of solutions that will reveal themselves.
Take the leap.
KMG is a good grinder. So is my 'Tracey Mickley No-Weld' that I built from scrap for far, far less--in a single day. It is the heart of my shop.
All my knives come from that grinder.
Follow your own path, but always consider the possibilitlies.

I'm thinking of letting go of a Weatherby Vanguard, bought in 2012 I think. .25-06, Bell & Carson stock, Timney trigger. I also have reloading dies, some loaded rounds, extra brass. I haven't shot it in over a year. My wife bought me a Tikka T3 light for anniversary in 2013. It's chambered in 7mm-08. I carried it in Idaho on several hunts, it's a great mountain rifle and I've fallen in love. I just never pick up the Weatherby any more and never really bonded with it in the first place, so I've kind of toyed with the idea of trying to sell it. Having said that, I've regretted every gun I ever sold....
