knife shop got a new tool

The leather sheaths have been a big hit, but they are very time consuming. I looked around and saw a machine that would help, and add a lot of pizazz to my leather work to boot! While buying leather supplies, I ran across a glowforge laser "printer". It should just be called a cnc laser cutter, because it is just varying amounts of power between cutting and engraving..... anyway I digress.....

I met a young marine about to be deployed to the middle east. I asked if he had a good knife to take to war. He replied that he just had a pocket knife. I got his address and told him to be looking for a care package in the mail. After conferring with some Marine buddies of mine, we ended up settling on two knives for the various rigours of life in the field. This is what I sent to him.....

I thought maybe his name and unit would help things from "growing legs" and walking off.

other experiments with said device!!

So I have been learning to draw in adobe illustrator, to get my sheath designs into leather. Boy is that a learning curve!. But it sure is fast. The Gforge cuts out a sheath and welt in about 50 seconds. It takes about five minutes to engrave my makers mark and other designs into the sheath. It will also make it possible to personalize things for clients.

into this....

I don't much care for this design, but it is very practical....

Some small hand tools. The old Phillips ####### have seen better days so went on a hunt to see which I may like. The Felo feels quite nice compared to the old 4 lobe square handles that are imitations of the Snap On hard handles. Also wanted a JIS type driver since American Phillips isn't a correct fit for older Japanese screws.

This is a comparison of the Phillips head. The Vessel JIS driver has a "jaws" fit so these serrations bite into the screw head. I ordered the wrong one so I'll be getting the version that doesn't have these serrations. I'd use this on those stubborn screws that aesthetics aren't necessary.

A small ratchet for 1/4 sockets and screwdriver bits in comparison to the typical 1/4" ratchet:

Braiding examples

The gray bike is my 1995 Harley Dyna as I received it last year. The black bike is the same bike after I changed out the gas tank, rear fender, exhaust system, rebuilt the carb, modified the breather system, added digital instrumentation, added turn signals and running lights (all LEDs), did a lot of tuning and painted the whole mess...
