Heat treating O-1 (again)
I am going to follow this simple procedure for HT O-1
1. Place blades in the furnace and stand up on edge. Heat to 1450?F. As soon as this temperature is reached then begin soak time of 15 to 20 minutes. 2. Quench nose down. While in oil move blade up/down. 3. After the blades have cooled to approx. 125?F, place them in the furnace (at 375?F). Allow them to remain (draw) for 2 hours. There is a million threads on HT O-1 that makes your head spin. I want to start with something simple. If you see anything wrong with the above procedure plesse let me know. Thanks, Alex |

Nothing wrong with that, but my process is slightly different and I imagine there are many other variations.
I like to put the blades in the oven edge up figuring that the air in the middle of the oven (where the edge is) is also the air that the thermocouple is in. The bottom of the oven may be cooler and actually sink some heat. Blades are thin and can change temperature quickly so I like to put them in the oven and then heat to 1200 F for 5 minutes to allow things to stabilize a little bit. Then on up to 1475 for a maximum of 20 minutes. Quench point first into oil warmed to 125 F. I prefer not to move the blade in the oil in order to try to avoid uneven cooling that might lead to warpage. I understand that gas pockets or superheated steam might form around the blade and prevent some cooling, but that hasn't seemed to be an issue for me. Finally, I temper at 400 F for one hour, allow the blade to cool to room temp (outside the oven), and temper for another hour at 400 F. The exact temperature for tempering can vary according to blade thickness and the intended use of the blade but 400 pretty average ..... |
