damascus???? what do i need to know.

I have a buddy that makes custom buckles and spurs. He offered to trade me a knife for a custom buckle.
One snag... he wants it out of Damascus.... and I have never used any of that stuff. I thought it would be a cool project to try. The blade he wants is a simple chisel ground tanto with a blue paracord wrap.

How different is this stuff to work than the other steels i have been tinkering with. As far as the heat treat I will probably send it out.

Were would be a good place to get a piece about 9 inches long.???

Should I shy away from trying Damascus since I'm still really new at this?or jump in and go for it?

Damascus works just like the steels that it is made from as far as making and heat treating the blade is concerned. It's the finishing that will drive you nuts. But, a paracord handle will simplify things a bunch. Go find some Alabama Damascus, it's about as cheap as damascus gets and give it a try. The most that can happen is you'll lose the money if the blade craps out....

I think that Jantz and Admiral Steel also carry damascus bars. Jim Hrisoulas also wrote a book on on damascus. Most of it is about the different patterns and how to work with them but, as I remember, he also dealt with finishing them and bringing out the pattern after grinding your blade. You also might try Alpha Knife Supply to see if they carry damascus bars; I really don't recall. Not one of my goals at this time.

Wow on further inspection this stuff is Real expensive....... so this may not happen cant do 150$ bucks in steel for something I'm gonna trade off.... also the only billets I can find are huge any ideas where I could find a piece 1"-1 1/2" x 8-9"?
I'm sure something like that would be far more reasonable than a 3 1/2 X15 Bar.

Hondo, ran across some cheap priced damascus blades and bars at Masecraft. $40 for a bar similar to what you are looking for.

You get what you pay for with Damascus. If you get it cheap, you can bet it's probably from Pakistan and may or may not be any good. Alabama Damascus has smaller pieces on Ebay all the time.

If you call Alabama Damascus and talk to Brad (he da man), tell him what you want and he may have some cuts or drops that he will sell much cheaper than a full billet. He's a good guy and will work with you if he can.
