Make sure when you are filing or hand sanding the ENTIRE knife is supported, if you let it hang out of a vice there is a lot of wasted effort when the knife flexes

How do you mount yours in there? I've gripped mine both with the entire handle in the vise and with the knife in a c clamp mounted in the vise.

Files, even the best, will dull very quickly if used incorrectly. Conversely, they will last a long time if treated well and used properly.
>Never draw a file backward - as in a scrubbing motion back and forth
>Keep the teeth clean - get a file card and learn to use it.
>Don't toss in a drawer or with other files where they can be banged around, treat them like a knife or any other cutting implement and carefully protect the cutting edges.
>Not all files are equal - buy good ones, and the right ones for the job/task
(here's where visiting an established maker comes in....right tool + right technique = good job)

The 1080 should come annealed from Texas Supply as with most. Try some hardened steel and you'll see the difference. My guess is dull files and bad technique.

X2 what Carl said.... and to answer your question. When I hand sand (don't use files) the basic concept of what I do is the knife is clamped to a a piece of angle iron and the angle iron in a vise. Also using a good sanding stick (I wrap sand paper around a piece of steel thats used a sort of sanding block)

It only takes one "back drag" to pretty much ruin a file even when brand new. Also, all files/file mfgrs. are not equal. Buy known quality.
I'm sure if you were close enough for a visit I could change your whole perspective on file use.

What brand would you recommend? I have to admit mine were fairly cheap because it was a large variety of files and I have a limited budget.

I wish I was close enough. It would be nice to meet another knifemaker and see how they work.

There are a few different brands that I use, but mainly I stick to Nicholson's and Simmon's. Not been impressed with the Kobalts (Lowes')or Chrome-edge (Sears).
Should be able to do a "search" and read some threads on files here on KNF for a lot more detailed info.

If you don't mind the drive and like to camp, you are welcome to attend the next Trackrock Hammer-in down in Blairsville, GA. It will be the last weekend in Sept this year and the last weekend in March next spring. I'm always there.

I'll look those up then.

While I like camping(I'm getting to spend time camping in the Rockies while I'm visiting family!) I probably wouldn't be able to because I'll be back in my school semester and working. Thanks though.
