Adlam engraved sheath for a period style bowie
The talent around here is mind-boggling! Thanks to Tim Adlam for working with me on this project. The blank throat and tip surfaces on Bill Sowell's sheath offered a lot of room for engraving but also presented some challenges. Tim, you did a fantastic job! I'm working on getting better images but I just wanted to share this one now, simply because I'm excited that the engraving turned out so well. If you like it too, let Tim know. He gets all the credit. All I did was tell him to "go for it" and that I would "pay for it."

Beautiful!
Great period look, very nice lettering. Some of the new folks may not realize how hard nice looking lettering can be to pull off. take care, Tom |

Very Nice work Tim! Beautiful piece. Also, I like your photo Buddy, it brings out the detail of the hand finishing, I love to see that!

A pleaure and a challenge Buddy!
This was an interesting piece to work with. First off, the concept evolved around an 1860's period style or effect. Secondly, It was to commemorate Bill Sowell's acheivement for posterity by a far-thinking Buddy Thomason! You may wonder why the knife didn't receive similar embellishment? The knife was judged and awarded as it appears, so we decided that on that basis, it should stand on its own merits. In my mind, the sheath decoration held a secondary role. It's #### hard for an engraver, with this much metal before him...not to go nuts! Of course there's components on this sheath that require attention, but creating a balance between what I could do, vs what I felt appropriate, can be judgementally tricky. The lettering layout/composition was probably the most difficult. "Get the point across without writing a book"! The thinness of the metal was a concern. Nimschke scroll requires a broader or wider cut than what we normally see today. The emphasis cuts I used are shallow and wide to simulate that effect. In the end, I feel the embellishment does what it was intended to do...create a certain old-time flavor, and celebrate the knife! Tell us how you kept the graver from springing back in you face....... and while your at it, tell us how you held the knife case in the jaws of your engraving, holding apparatus. Thanks Jim |

Remember what Steve Lindsay mentioned about graver pressure? I let the handpiece do its job, and really didn't have much of a control problem. With a moderately fast stroke setting, and a light touch, it works surprisingly well! The wide graver cut I used [mainly on the scroll], required cleaning up now and then. Vibration is always a big concern with these thin parts. Yep, it sounds like you're beating on a hollow drum! Maybe I make more cuts than what's the norm for denser material, but it never hurts to play it safe. The holding fixture I use is made from a maple block...very simple. Metal is secured with some hot glue, and the leather is wrapped/taped off for protection. Absolutely no vise pressure involved. I haven't found anything better or quicker for this purpose when the throat and tip are attached to the leather. Thanks Tim for the quick reply....
Really a beautiful piece of work...... I think most will agree this is where historical embellishment does a lot for the authenticity of the original work. Everything works well together....you did great job and I can tell Buddy is very pleased. Jim |

Tim!!
You Have done a wonderful job on this.. I am a huge fan of L.D.Nimschke and have studied his work in dept. and believe me folks it is not an easy style to pull off, I have tried on many occasions with only fair results, Tim has done a great job, my hats off to you. The lettering turned out very nice as well, Lettering is a hole other facet of engraving, and is an art in it's own right. and again Tim has done a top notch job. Tim I am more impressed with your work every time I see it. It's work like this that keeps me inspired after all these years. Just Awesome!!
