There used to be a website that discussed French trade knives, but that site is no longer available. Anyway, they had some examples of knives recovered from Ft. Ticonderoga and other F&I sites with examples of filework along the spine. So, the practice goes back at least to before 1750 here in North America.

There are at least two seaxes I know of with filework on the spine, dated to around 1000AD...
So yes, it goes way back. __________________ A good friend told me one time about forging "What is there not to like, you get to break all the rules you were told as a kid, don't play with that it is sharp, don't play with fire, and don't beat on that" Wade Holloway See some of my work. |
