500 Nitro Express
This was quite the project.
...I call it "speed engraving"! Background: It was a matter of helping out gunmaker Butch Searcy with an immediate problem. His regular engraver became ill and couldn't get it done in the short term. I was able to step in and put this fire out...so to speak! I had 5 days to get it worked out. The gun is destined for next weeks Safari Club Intl. convention in Reno. On top of this...Butch allowed me the privilege of designing the pattern for the "Professional Hunter" grade rifle, and this gun is number 1 of that model. The pictures were shot in haste...and sorry if the resolution is off...but you'll get the idea. I have to admit that this job pushed my limits, but I'm proud of it none the less. Not shown because of no pictures taken; engraving on trigger guard, lettering of address and caliber on barrels, grip cap, forend latch and assorted screws. Designing and cutting "on the fly" is something hard to translate. Coming through in the crunch is kinda' satisfying! Butch is happy...I'm happy! Hope you all enjoy this. And it's even got wild roses as part of the pattern!
Very cool Tim - tastefully done. Will you get to do another some time that you won't have to rush so we could maybe get to see all of your work? __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher. Thanks guys,
Yeah, she's a cigar smoker! Tight English scroll work was never a favorite of mine. Usually too busy for my taste. This is my version with shading added. I like the open and more flowing style. I'm still developing the "standard" pattern for this rifle. Starting to appreciate the nuances of english scroll design. Pressures off for a bit! Lots of ideas flowing for future projects though. I'll have one to work on for a year...a no-holds-barred kinda' project. ....Maybe I'll break a few rules!.... Joe...I don't remember sleep!... Tim,
Very cool work. I have never tried the tight English scroll and never really liked it either but you did a fantastic job! Done right it does look great otherwise it looks like background fill but you did it right! |

Great work Tim! Classic look for a double gun (the're my favorite). I really like the sunburst on the tang.

nice workTIM!, Its always rewarding, though a pain to do one of these crunch jobs.I especially like the way you did the flourishes where the single line borders end.
I never much cared for English scroll either, but yea, after you get stuck doing it a time or two, it does start to grow on ya! |

Thanks again,
Scott, I muddled through on how to end those border lines. Something not quite right about a line that ends in space. I wanted a simple element that could be repeated while complimenting the theme of the pattern. I think this works. The starburst was as add-on at the end of this project. I kept thinking about this area and what would look better than just scroll. Being a big bore stopping rifle, I borrowed this old design element from the flintlock era. When you push the safety button forward, covering SAFE, the starburst is right there. BOOM! Kind of a subliminal boost! The gun is earmarked for South Africa after the show. It will be a user. I can't help envisioning the guy sighting down the barrels on some dangerous game! Tim __________________ http://www.adlamengraving.com |

Love the work.... This is my kind of engraving....just the right amount and well placed. Very taste...fully done. Good closed-form English engraving is hard to do and equally hard to layout. The flow is perfect for the space........ Thanks Jim |
