"Another unusual engraving project...."

Some month's back I had a client who approached me about engraving a saw back. Oddly enough the saw he was talking about is called a back-saw. Jay, my client, is a craftsman just like most of us here on this forum and network. Jay has been making and sharpening saws for many years and has made a study out of sharpening saws and studying their designs. As a matter of fact, he just finished a show on saw collecting for the History Channel. Anyway, this is our second project. The first was done in brass and this one is done in nickle silver. Jay keeps coming up with ideas that approaches the cutting edge of saw embellishment. These projects have been great for me and would be for any engraver?a lot of flat open space. When the saw is completed I will post pictures of the finished product.

Below is a 10-inch nickle silver bar 3/4 of an inch wide and 1/4 inch thick. The client wanted deep relief, so the back ground depth is relieved to a depth of around .025. A slot is cut in the lower 1/4-inch edge to accept the saw blade. The screws (not shown) are also engraved and will be shown in the finished product.

Jim
