a new idear of building a position vise
This is a very easy method.you just need a standard engraving block and a lazy susan.
Tight the screw in the body of engraving block untill it can not rotate itself. Point the center of your microscope at the center of the lazy susan, then just place the engraving block on the lazy susan, move the block into your sight, while engraving, rotate the lazy susan but not the engraving block. when you want to move the workpiece ,move the engraving block placed on the lazy susan. you just need a good lazy susan |

My lazy Susan is a couple of 1/4" thick steel plates, 18" in diameter with a big ass bearing welded inbetween. It is awesome.

That's a good way to do it. I do it that way too. But I also have have another lazy susan with an X-Y vise mounted on it. That way, you can just dial the piece into the center of rotation. I have made jaws for the X-Y vise that have the standard holes the same as the ball vice. That way, I can use all the standard pins and fixtures in it too. I know you had an X-Y vise and showed it with your ball vise mounted. Just lay it on your lazy susan and give it a try. It's another way. Best wishes to you and your bride, I hope you are enjoying married life. John. |

Here is a turntable that I made out of Corian. The bearing is recessed in the bottom side of the truntable and the top side of the turntable base to keep the profile low. I got the bearing at http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/pa...,44013&p=44014. The thing standing up in the back is a keyed post set in a base with a thumb screw to keep it indexed in the correct direction. The pin holder, which is also indexed with a thumb screw for the keyway can slide up and down the post to adjust to the heigth of your work. To locate your center of rotation you pull the pin forward, which is preset for the center of rotation for your turntable, position your work under the end of the pin then push the pin back out of your way.
