NRA Knives

Has anyone seen these? I was thinking they were unique and might be an intresting project except it says the are patented. Does that mean you cannot try to make one like it at all?

goto uspto.gov and search for D505597, I believe this is the design patent on this knife.

I am not a lawyer, but found this

Quote:

Does the patent only protect the EXACT design? Or does it protect the concept of the design? Looking for help!

Thanks in advance!

Answer
If it is a design patent, then the patent covers only the appearance, not the function. If the appearance is the same, then it infringes.
I actually question if the NRA knife is still under the patent, since the appearance is different from the drawings in the patent.

The one thing I see that I like the idea of is to put checkering onto a wood handle. Sometimes wood handles can be so smooth that they get real slippery while dressing large game. It's something I've been thinking about anyway.
