A Pair of Fighter-Bowies by Russ Andrews, JS

Russ Andrews may not be the best known journeyman smith, but that?s certainly no reflection on the quality of his work. Or maybe, in a way, it is: Russ spends so much time on each knife and is such a perfectionist that there simply aren?t a lot of his knives floating around. His commitment to excellence is very much evident in the product of his craft. These two fighter-bowies share some common traits ? forged blades of 1084 steel with looooong flowing clips that stretch almost the entire length of the spine, 416 stainless steel fittings and truly impeccable fit and finish.

The first of the pair features a 7 ?? blade and an overall length of 12?. The handle is ebony.

The second knife features an 8 ?? blade and an overall length of 13?.

The handle is formed from a particularly nice piece of stag, and is finished with an attractive domed steel but cap.

I hope you?ve enjoyed the pics.

Cheers,

Roger

A couple of superb bowies. This is another maker that I am going to have to watch in the future.

Thumbs up Ooo, ooo, ooo...

Russ does some great work. I've only seen a couple of this pieces, but those bowies are superbly executed. The guard-ferrule-handle work looks absolutely top notch and I see what you mean about the long clip - very elegant. Another subtle but clear sign of his mastery is the way that the guard has been further contoured esp on the stag handled one, when most makers would've left the guard plain oval.

Very inspiring. They're both fantastic. I'd bet they'll handle well too.

Does Russ also mark some of his blades "E R A" ?

Jason.

Thanks guys. Jason - I have seen Russ mark some of his knives "ERA II" - usually on a smaller blade.

Cheers,

Roger

Boy, oh boy! Those really get my blood pumping. They're perfect in every way. Believe it or not, my favorite feature is the rounded bottom of the choil right between the back of the cutting edge and the guard.

Just beautiful. Simply wonderful.
