After etching then what?
I just finished etching my first full damascus knife and now am not sure what I need to do with it so it stops the etch and so it doesn't rust. The damascus is O1 and 1095. I don't own any reneaisance wax which was one of the things mentioned in another thread. Is there an alternative?

You can stop the etch with TSP or baking soda in water or just a lot of water. Of course, that's done immediately after the etch. If the blade is dry then the stop probably won't have much effect any more (nothing much left to stop).
You can protect the blade any way that you would protect a blade made from those steels. Ren wax, Turtle Wax, oil of most any kind, etc. Just be sure to let the blade dry for a few hours before applying any of these things otherwise you may clean more of the black oxides off the blade than you want to.... |
