Should they be this hard to give away?

Well, It came time to start mailing out all the knives I've been making as Christmas Gifts. And , well I'm not sure I can do it...I've grown attached to each one. So I told my wife I Might just keep them all and she said what are you going to do with all of them. So This was my response.

A very practical carry option no?

Well, I guess I have to let them go.

Anyone else have anxiety watching a knife they made go away?

Yep, tough to let them go, for 2 reasons. First, you put all that work into them that you want to keep them all for yourself. Then you start looking at them closely with a critical eye, and find that blemish that no one else would find and think, "there's no way I can let this go out the door, even for free, 'cause it has my name on it."

The next thing you know you have the world's largest collection of your own knives. . .

I've been making knives for 20 years and I own three of my own knives good enough that I would have been willing to sell to somebody (except that I made them for me) and a few more 'less successful' knives that I use in the kitchen and shop area. Of the remaining hundreds of knives I've made I can honestly say that with very few exceptions I couldn't wait to get them out the door and fervently hope that I never see them again.

I want them to be used by people that appreciate them and maybe pass them on to their sons and daughters for the next hundred years or more. I want them to be well made enough that the owners don't want to let go of them and that they are still serviceable a hundred years and more from now ...

Heh...I know the feeling as I work on knife #2. I mentioned that I was going to give it to a friend as I worked it. A few minor mishaps and a pant-load of hand sanding has left me wanting to keep it. It has some flaws but I really like it. So, I've just made up my mind that I'm keeping it. My buddy is gonna have to wait for another, less flawed knife. Thanks ricky arthur, I feel much better now. Twenty years from now I'll be on an episode of hoarders but instead of cleaning out dead cats, they'll be cleaning out my knives by the truck load.

I'm with Ray on this one. I have made about 50 knives this year alone.
I have a few of my own knives, some I made for me, some prototypes.
The rest.....I couldn't wait for them to leave. By the time the sheath is done, I'm sick of looking at them.

By the way Ricky, your picture made me spit my coffee out, funny as hell.

I feel just the opposite, I tell myself I'm going to keep the next knife I make. Until someone emails and buys it. I hate to see them go.

I may be nuts, but i have always felt that selling knives was like selling my children. But, as long as they went to a good home and were well taken care of, it was ok with me.

Simple solution: Just make lots more knives. Then you won't miss the ones you give or sell.
