Finished my third knife, this time i tried my hand at some homemade micarta...ended up with a little bit of pitting on the handle, i tried to make a little too much at one time.
The knife is 1095 with my micarta handles and satin finish on blade...not perfect by any means. Critiques are welcome.

The knife looks very good to me. If you get a chance explain how you made the scales. I like the color of them. Thanks for posting.

Walt, that was my first try a making micarta. If you look on youtube you can find several tutorials.
Its pretty simple..find some material that you like then cut it into about 3 inch wide strips, get some bondo fiberglass resin, follow directions on resin can to mix. then spred on each layer of material building a stack. you have to work fairly quickly or the resin will become lumpy and hard to work with. take your stack of resin saturated cloth and clamp it in a press ( i used some scrap 2x4s and c-clamps). Let it sit overnight, take it out and trim the edges off with a band saw.
I alternated a neon green and black material for mine, the colors will daken when you put the resin on them. Also you may want to make a little at a time, I tried to do strips about 2 feet long and 2 inches thick to make alot at once, but the bottom layers were starting to harden before i could finish and i wasnt able to press all the airbubbles out.
Oh yeah...when putting your resin and material together work on top of a large piece of wax paper so you can wrap the whole bundle into a tight package when you put it in your press.

its definitely a neat design, a real eye catcher for sure. And like Eric said, how does it feel? How does it perform?

It fits my hand like a glove..with the back of the handle curved like it is it just kind of hangs in your hand even with a relaxed grip...thanks to everyone who helped me with my epoxy issues

That knife looks awesome man. Great job the design is very artistic and catches the eye.

I your planning on making some more micarta in the future you should look into getting some polyester resin used in vaccume moulds. I got some from a fiberglass shop and it has a 30-60 min work time.
