hello everyone im new here

i must say i have no experience with knifes ,but i was hoping someone could help me out on a knife i inherited from my grandfather , he got it when he bought his house and the previous owner who had it on the wall and left it there back about 1970 .
the knife im talking about is a bowie knife on a wooden plaque (ive included pictures , im not interested in selling it but i would like to make it look the best as i can .
i must tell you back when i was younger i tried to clean it (again had best interest in heart in doing it ) i used a lliquid cant remember which one it was back in the mid 1980s . well it looked good at first but then a red rusty look appeared . just recently i heard the best way to get rust off a knife was to use vinegar . well i did that and it took off alot of the rust but theres still some on the knife and im not happy with the way it looks yet.
id like to clean the blade where it has a more shinny silver blade look then it does or as close to to how it should look .my question is how ? i have some pictures im including ,that i just took .
i know i should have asked 1st before trying to clean it , but i didnt know this site was out there until i was trying to find out info on this knife etc. . again im not trying to clean it to sell just to display at my house , so if anyone can give me info on how to clean it up the correct way please do ,its why im here now .also , if anyone has more history on this knife id love to hear it . if you have a link for the info im requesting that would be great to . thank you again for any help you can give me in advance and sorry but dont beat this novice up for just trying to clean it up in the past .

There are products designed to remove rust chemically but they usually don't get 100% of the rust as you have discovered. Even if the rust is removed it will likely leave tiny pits in the blade. Removing rust generally requires re-finishing the blade if you really want it to look right. Doing that will require skills you probably don't have at this time and learning them will mean making a few knives. If that isn't in the cards for you then get some 0000 grade or finer steel wool and get to work. Try to stroke the wool in one direction on the blade and in a straight line. That will remove the rust. The finish will probably be messy but if you're careful it won't be too bad. Practice on some other knife might be a good idea.

As for pictures, look lower on the screen below the box where you are typing your message and find the Manage Attachments button. That will load a picture from your computer although the system usually doesn't let anyone post pictures until they have participated in the forum for a while ...
