Bowie handle i finished up!

My buddy bought a damascus bowie blade off ebay. i just finished up the handle on it! the wood is a mystery to me????? Its a piece he found somewhere and wanted to use but it is for sure heavy! anybody recognize it? i wish the tang did not show through but to get it perfect for is hand it had too. hes got big hands so the big burly handle fit perfect after it was all said and done! his plans for is just a camp knife but if he needs to kill a bear with it he could always beat it to death with the handle!

anyway we just eyeballed and i put the files to it checking with his hand to get it to fit perfect!

It's really hard to tell about wood just from a picture but with your description of it being really heavy and the shine that on it, even though there is not mention of finish, I'm wondering about something like lignum vitae. If he has a scrap of it left around the shop see if it floats on water. If it doesn't lignum vitae would be a definite possibility. One of my favorite woods, if I can find the Old World stuff. The New World stuff is on the CITES regulations and can have a bit of a greenish cast to it. Both are oily and dense enough to need nothing but a fine sanding and a coat of wax.

Just a reminder since you said you had worked with Purpleheart but didn't mention one, please make sure you're using a respirator. Some of those woods are toxic when inhaled.

Some people are sensitive to purple heart and have a reaction, some won't. It's hit or miss really.

Ive used purpleheart a lot and never had a problem, though I cant get around tulipwood and aromatic cedar at all. Hondo did it smell kind of sweet when you were shaping it? walnut has a very distinctive odor.

And theres a potential cumulative effect. What doesn't effect you now may build up to disasterous effects later.

Not worth the risk, imho.

If I'm grinding anything, I'm wearing a dust mask at the very least. I wanna dance with my daughters when they marry.

The same safety tips apply to your pets. Please be careful he is not sleeping or breathing in contaminated dust.

The only thing that you should be breathing into your lungs is clean air. Use a respirator when grinding or sanding with power tools. Forget about dust masks. They only make you feel like you're doing something to protect yourself. I vacuum right after I finish working and before I take the respirator off. My shop vac stays plugged in all the time; all I have to do is pick up the nozzle and push the little red button.
