This AKI 2015 Knife, perhaps the "Jewel on My Table,"is an 8 1/2? Full-integral Loveless-style Big Bear Fighter, made from CPM 154-CM steel and Mother-of-pearl handles with hidden pins & has an overall length of 14 inches. Decorated with 24k gold inlays and overlays, set with diamonds and gilded pearl by Barry Lee Hands, this is the first Big Bear ever engraved by Barry.

My head just spins thinking about the talent that is required to compleat a project this nice. Keeping the production sequence straight would be a feat in its own.
Fantastic blade! Erik |

WOW!! Amazing! I am amazed at the lugged guard on a integral knife. Stupid question but how difficult is that? It is hard enough when the guard is separate. The engraving of course is just as amazing to me. I have never tried to engrave so the entire process seems difficult. On a hardened blade? Again WOW! I get worried when I mark the blade, afraid I will mess it up. Imagine taking a finished knife by Steve Johnson then start carving on it! Is that a little nerve racking? I know Mr. Hands is an expert but still....

Thanks, everyone.
TWITHERS: We grind the blade and polish it to final tolerances, we also shape the guard, sub-hilt and rear bolster area and then assemble the handle and finish it. Basically, we make a knife that is not heat treated. Then I dis-assembled the handles pieces and Barry made all of the necessary cuts for inlaying the gold and engraved the background. We then sent the blade to Peters' Heat treating and Brad Stallsmith heat treated the whole thing keeping the finish as clean as possible, so that it took very little effort to bring the polish back up at Barry's studio. Barry then brought it to my shop where I re-installed the handle panels with hidden pins. At this point, Barry had already done some of the inlay cuts in the MOP, but not all. After re-assembly, he finished inlaying the gold on all parts of the knife & cuts in the MOP; then, of course he had to make the many cuts in the gold to sculpt the leaves, stems and inlay the diamonds. To say that it took a looooonnnngggg time is an understatement! So, he never cut into the steel after heat treat, all was done before the blade was hardened. __________________ http://www.srjknives.com NRA Endowment Member Knifemakers' Guild Member since 1971 "May you live all the days of your life." - Jonathan Swift Last edited by Steve; 11-10-2015 at 01:47 AM. |
