Knife Vise? Help

Probably been covered on this forum many times but I cannot find any threads that talk about making a knife vise? Could someone direct me to thread(s) talking about this. I have seen some really nice ones made from pieces of pipe and would like to make my own. Any pictures of what you are useing would help a ton.

Thank you for any advise, pics, help you can provide.

Bob Urban

Not sure about other threads but I can give you a good description of mine. I ust took a 2" square hollow pipe 12" long. drilled and tapped two holes in the one side for a couple of butterfly bolts. Inside I put two pieces of wood 3/4" thick. This whole contraption fits nicely into my vise. To turn the knife ust loosen teh vise and turn the whole knife vise in the bench vise. The first one I tried I made out of aluminum, tha didn't work since the threading on the aluminum did not last, too soft. The next one was made of 1/4" walls of steel. Haven't ripped out a thread since.
Hope that helps
Steve

Here's one I built that might give you a couple of ideas:

This vise is substantially the same as Steve's description above but it's smaller, only about 7" in length. The interior is two 1/8" bars of steel with thin rubber glued to them. One bar is glued to the channel iron so it can't move, the other bar is completely free to move. The clamp pushes against the free moving bar to pinch and hold the knife blade between the rubber jaws.

The whole thing was mounted to a plate with a big butterfly bolt. The vise can rotate to any position and then be clamped in place with the butterfly bolt.

That entire construction was welded to a big round rod that fits into my PanaVise base. In this way, the vise can be positioned just about any conceivable way....
