Attaching the threaded end to a Randall tang
I have always enjoyed Pete Hamilton's book, illustrating the making and assembly of a Randall Made knife.
The process that's missing in the book is how the all thread is attached to the end of the tang. Question is, how is it attached? Brazed, soldered, welded? I even considered if the end of the tang could be threaded by a die. Scott, if you are out there, if it's not a company patented secret, could you explain how this is done? I know that it's a critical part of the construction of the knife, as it keeps the handle attached. Thanks, Sam Last edited by samg; 05-25-2017 at 11:51 AM. |

If you compare similar points on the two blades (blade tip, beginning of choil, hilt shoulder, and thread shoulder), it looks to me as if the unneeded portion of the tang is removed, then a portion is sized down and threaded. (picture here)

By the pic I'd say the threads are cut in. My preference is to braze them on as I can use larger threads.

Sam, the tang is reduced and then we thread the "titty" to an 8/32 or 10/32 die...

Thanks Scott. Makes sense to thread the tang to keep the continuity thus strength of the tang.
Thanks for clearing that mystery for me. It crossed my mind from time to time. Regards, Sam |
