Lightbulb how to pattern etch blades

I would like somone to tell me how to pattern etch my knife blades. As I have not done this process before. I have used pure vinegar and let them sit sumersed for twelve hours and then wipe them clean and let them air dry then rinse them in hot water and it gives a dull and blackish grey color to them. It is very durable from what I have seen. I took it to a wire wheel on my grinder and it only brightened it up and made it a semi-gloss finish. And if it will stand up to that I beleive it should be strong ehough. I do know that murritic acid with etch the blade and that ferric acid will also. But will it give me any type of poattern if it is not a damascus blade. But on metal file, buzz saw blade, or cross cut saw blade, type steel which I know is a high carbon steel. Possibly 1095 high carbon? I have heard by etching you may see some pattern from the heat treatment. Is this true? And how can I pattern etch the whole blade?

Any acid will etch your blade with varying results. You will not get any patterns unless you are working damascus with the exception of a "Temper" line. This line between hard and soft steel will show up with a light etch of Feric Chloride. Go to Primosknives.com and look at some of Terry's work, you will se a great line on his knives.

You can mask your blade with a design and etch it, then remove the mask for a pattern. Ray Richards has done some of this lately.
