WTB buffer/polisher

Just wondering if any of you guys had buffer that you'd sell or trade. Looking for something to turn 8" wheels at 1725 rpm.

I have a double spindle 3/4 hp (IIRC- will chk) 110 Volt,,,but it spins @3450 RPM. Has tapered spindles to accommodate pin hole buffs. If you would be interested. Teddy..

Thanks Teddy, I have found a number of 3450 rpm buffers around the area, hoping to find a 1725/1800 rpm.

Robb, you might be able to use a variable speed bench grinder .....they cost around 120-150...rpm's are 2000-3400......sears has a slow speed grinder (1750 rpm) on sale right now for 113.....good luck.......Lou

did a little more research and palmgren makes a 10" grinder/buffer for about $400
+/-.....it turns at 1725 rpm and is 1 hp.....later.....Lou

Good luck with that Robb. I wanted one too that only spun at 1750 but gave up and got a Baldor that spins like 3600. It is a beast! Anyway, Grizzly sells an assembly that has two ends for the buffs and a pulley for a motor, you provide the motor. That may be an option for you.

Rob, try contacting appliance repair companies. They should have plenty of 1750 motors...not sure of HP.

Also, contact electric motor repair shops for used motors.

BarryC, I have been thinking to just build one, kind of like Travis has.

Teddy, thanks for the info.

I guess its time to order some parts and hobble something up!

Barry, how much difference can you tell in the 3600 rpm motor? Does it just cut more aggressively? Will it burn wood or micarta?

Robb I never used a slower one so I really have nothing to compare it to. It is a beast that will snatch something out of you hand before you realize its gone. I haven't burnt anything but knuckles on it so far. I imagine it would probaby burn wood or mircata if the buffs are loaded and you hold the piece in one spot for a long time. But I doubt it would if you use it like you're supposed to.

The only real buffer I have ever used is Travis'. The rest of mine I have buffed with, now don't laugh, an arbor and 4" wheel in my drill. I wrap the body of the drill in an old t-shirt, mount it in my vise and go to it. It's not very efficient. I saw a decent looking buffer on a stand on c-list and figured for what he was asking I couldn't buy the parts to build one, but it turns at 3600 rpm. I was advised by a good friend and 40+ year knife maker to build a wooden dog house over the wheels so the blade doesn't come back at ya.

That depends on the size of buff and the polishing compound you use. IIRC, a 4" buff on a 3600 rpm motor will spin at the same speed as an 8" buff on a 1750 rpm motor. Buffs come in sizes 1" thru 10" (and that's just the jewelry industry sizes) and widths from a knife edge through 1 1/2 inches.

And then you have the type of attachment to the motor. They are called arbors and come in a size to fit the motor and have either a 1/2" or 5/8" shaft depending on the buff. You can also get a tapered arbor that take buffs with a "pin-hole" center. The advantage is in the ability to change a buff quickly, depending on the compound needed for the job.

If you are making knives professionally...save yourself a lot of trouble and get a 3/4 hp, extended shaft buffing machine. It will be 3600 rpm. AND BE CAREFUL- THE BUFFER IS THE MOST DANGEROUS MACHINE IN YOUR SHOP.
