Etching tang question

G'day guys.
I'm in the middle of making my first knife out of an old file.
I'm planning to vinegar etch the blade to give it some patina and using some corian for the scales.
My question is whats the best way to do this. If I etch the blade then attach the handle, then finish the handle in place I'm going to sand off the patina on the tang.
I'm tossing up between trying to re-apply some vinegar to the tang afterwards, or to clamp the scales in place, shape them, then remove and etch the blade, and then glue and pin with no more sanding.
Anyone got any tips on the best way to deal with this.
Thanks
Grant

Normally, I would say attach and shape the scales and then re-etch the tang - I usually use a Q-Tip. But, in this case, I wouldn't bother. Just attach and finish the handle and then etch the entire thing at one time. You're using Corian for the scales, the etch won't affect that stuff. Might discolor a little but should clean up easy enough. Test a piece and find out ....

Corian is virtually impervious to darn near everything. My buddy's dad is a retired cabinet maker and even the windowsills in his house are corian. He uses it for everything! A little vinegar shouldn't hurt it at all. Do a search for Hatcher knives and check out his shop updates. He does a lot of stonewashing and dry fits everything first. Plus, it's a fun site to look at and has lots of cool stuff.

I love his use of ironwood/carbon fiber! His blade shapes are a bit wonky for me, but his craftsmanship is awesome! His stonewash finishes are cool as well. Since I don't have a tumbler anymore, my attempt may involve a blade in pvc pipe. That pipe just might have to vibrate around in the back of my work truck for a few days... The roads in the Texas Hill Country happen to suck and will be great for vibrations, especially in the back of an F-450.

Go big, salvage an old drier with the element burned out. It'll tumble the heck out of anything and it has a timer.

Agree, vinegar won't bother the corian, just use fresh vinegar as older iron saturated stuff might leave a surface stain you'll have to clean off.....great for bleached out antler though.
Alternative is cold blue and a Q-tip - quick swipe then wipe. If done carefully it'll never be noticeable.
