Kydex Question for Ed

Ed,

What thickness kydex do you use?? Also, how do you get that nice seem. Do you actually use an adhesive to glue the sides together??

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick!

The kydex that I use is .80 thickness. I purchase it in 4'X8' sheets from an outfit in Colorado called Port Plastics. On my EBK scabbards I cut it into 6" squares, mold it to the individual knife, and then bandsaw and sand the exposed edges. The only thing that holds the bottom seam of the kydex together (besides the molding process) are two "Chicago screws". I've never found a glue that with reliably hold kydex together for very long.

If somebody knows, please chime in with you suggestions!

Knifekits.com sells "eyelets" for kydex that work very well.

Ed,

Thanks a lot for the info. To date, your EBK sheath has been the best Kydex I've owned. It rides great and is very secure and strong. Thanks again,

Nick

Your nearly 7/8" kydex is going to be awfully hard to bend.

Good catch! I did mean .080! Guess that's what happens when your brain is going faster than your hands can type!

If you want something to glue your kydex together with try this...

Go to your hardware store and get 2 bottles of pvc type glue (solvent glue)

First is cleaner... its made by Oateys.. and is in a can, you want the CLEAR cleaner/primer.

Then get the Orange labeled lue for abs/pvc...

Clean (JUST THE SECTION YOU WANT GLUED) and then use the orange cement...

It will fuse the kydex together.

I use little flux type brushes for the cement and cleaner as the enclosed swabs are way to big for a folded type sheath.

Just remember, you need a way to get your knife in and out. So cementing the joint all the way to the opening of yoru sheath will most of the time not give it enough flex to let the knife in and out easily...

Caution, these 2 chemicals are VERY flamable... so use appropriate measures of care!

Just try it out...!
