I have been teaching with the Farmer to Farmer Program and these forges are typical

Looks like they are about to repair that pick axe or adz or whatever it is. They must be able to localize the heat pretty well since they haven't bothered to remove the wooden handle....

Hi Ray
I believe it is an adz. The forge has a truck wheel and tire and is moved like a wheelbarrow. The forge is fired by charcoal as most everything else in Haiti. The forest is all but gone but that is all the people have. I found an old man and a small boy making charcoal. A heavy truck makes the rounds picking up bags of charcoal like these and hauling them into the city.

I will be leaving Friday for another month of teaching farmers in Haiti. A part of what I will be doing is working with bio-gas digesters. Is anyone firing a forge on bio-gas?
