New guy
Didn't see a specific place to post this, but just saying hello to all since I just joined the forums. Actually starting to make my first knife today, looking forward to it. Anyone on here in Louisiana?

You picked the right place, welcome to knife making. I'm pretty sure we have some LA makers around here somewhere but check the Sticky threads at the top of the forum - one of them is for finding other knife makers.
Whether or not that works out for you we also have a Chat Room every Sunday night that is especially for new makers so I hope you can drop in. Details are in those same Sticky threads.... |

I'll def try and make it to those when I can. After spending some time with my sander today I can tell I need to work on my technique, not holding my angle well

I took some as I was working. Will post them as soon as I figure out how lol. Should I put them under a new thread?

You can put them here if you can post them. The system usually doesn't let new members post pictures right away. If that happens, that restriction will be lifted after you have participated in the forum for a while ...

All you need is to have the picture on your own computer. Smaller pictures are better as there is a limit to how much you will be allowed to store here so if you are using an iPhone to take pictures you might want to download some free picture editing software so that you can edit your pictures.
Once you have the picture, use the Go Advanced button instead of the Post Quick Reply button to start your post. On that screen you will find a Manage Attachments button towards the bottom of the page. That button will allow you to point to your picture on your computer and add it to your post ... |

I dont remember exactly what grit I took each pic at, but here is my progress so far. Noob question, but do y'all drill pin holes in tang before or after heat treat? and I'm using O-1 tool steel.

Definitely drill before heat treat whenever possible. Also, unless you have an electric furnace for heat treating consider switching to 1084 instead of the O1. You'll save some money that way (unless you get your O1 for free) and the results will be about the same. The O1 will do much better when you have an electric furnace and can get precise temperature control.
There is a Sticky on where to buy 1084 ... |
